On the evening of 17th May 2016 in the Guildhall, Helston at 7pm, Cllr Mike Thomas' tenure as Town Mayor of Helston ended. His successor is Councillor Gillian Geer, who has been his deputy since November. In his term of office, Councillor Thomas has overseen some changes in Helston including the start of the renovation of the Grylls monument area, the HX1 and HX2 planning applications, the reintroduction of public realm CCTV within the town centre and has raised money for worthy causes including the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundatin, Helston Food Bank and local sports clubs. Mayor Geer congratulated him on a successful Mayoralty and presented him with a Town Plaque. Councillor Geer spoke about her love of Helston and her regret that the granite pavements had been removed over the years. One of her aims is to improve the pavements with more traditional worked granite slabs.
After the formal part of the evening, the meeting was adjourned until 19th May and the Mayoral party and guests retired to Wheal Dream, Helston for a celebratory meal.
