Porthleven Road will close on Flora Day as usual

Responding to public reaction over its decision not to close the Porthleven Road on Flora Day (as there will be no street stalls in that location), the Amenities Committee reconsidered and has now approved the closure as in previous years.
Speaking at the Amenities Committee meeting on 26th January, Town Mayor Cllr Gillian Geer informed her fellow councillors that a lot of people in the town did not want the road to remain open. She reminded the Committee that the Road Closure Order was not expensive but the professional security guards that marshalled the barriers were a significant expense at around £800 last year.
Divisional Cornwall Councillor Andrew Wallis was among those opposed to keeping the road open stating that the public was used to walking along the road to the Fair in safety. In a letter Cllr Wallis informed the Committee that he had contacted the Fair operators requesting a contribution to the costs of the closure.
The day after the meeting, confirmation was received that the Fair operators would in fact contribute £500.
