Helston’s Flood Defence

Be part of Helston’s Flood Defence
The Environment Agency completed new flood defence works at the end of 2020. The new flood defence covers 600m along the River Cober and has significantly reduced the risk of flooding to 121 homes.
The Environment Agency have found that the operation of flood defence schemes work best when they involve the local community in its operation and are looking to involve the community in closing the flood gate at Kingdom Hall. Helston Town Council and the Environment Agency are seeking support to establish a community flood group for Helston so that individuals are supported by a mutual network of local gate volunteers.
The Environment Agency’s experience in communities including Lympstone, Starcross, and Teignmouth has taught them that flood gates work better when they are operated by a community flood group, rather than individuals on their own. There is safety and resilience in numbers. Community closed gates can offer more flexibility for gates to be opened after the risk has passed reducing inconvenience to the community.
The Environment Agency will provide those interested with training on the safe operation of the gates, including triggers to notify when the gates need to be closed.
